The Think Big Academy trains and prepares people from disadvantaged communities for roles in hospitality. Its core mission is to address youth unemployment and empower communities in busy tourism areas, while closing the critical skills gaps within South Africa’s hospitality sector
at the same time.

By offering structured learnership opportunities to individuals who may lack formal qualifications or work experience, the programme empowers young people with employable skills, practical exposure and a pathway into long-term careers.

The qualification is earned through the International Hotel School, which covers half of the tuition fees. Learners also receive a stipend facilitated by Youth Employment Service (YES) and Boundless Group.

Through a combination of academic learning and hands-on work experience, participants graduate with recognised qualifications and significantly improved prospects of securing permanent employment.

This opportunity means growth and exposure for me. Working in a hotel has helped me build confidence, develop practical skills, and better understand the hospitality industry. It confirmed my passion for working with people and pursuing a career in hospitality.

If companies come together to train, upskill and hire people to perform critical functions, in hospitality, tourism and beyond, they could start to move the needle on unemployment in the country.
